Caught Between
Thomas McFadden’s debut collection — a raw, searching book of poems about faith, doubt, and the ground between them. Written during his college years and published in 2018, Caught Between sits in that honest, in-between place we all know.
“No matter where you are in your faith journey, you will be inspired by these poems and the heart and passion of McFadden.”
— Matt Schell, Author & Pastor

Dedicated to:
The friends and family who remained in constant support of my work. Thank you all for your love and generosity.
The Tunnel
I can see the clearing.
It's coming fast,
it's coming now.
The tunnel was opening.
We increased speed,
faster and faster.
The light became greater,
filling up my eyes,
faster,
it was all white.
Then black.
There was a burning sensation at my feet;
it moved to my fingertips,
consuming my body.
I could hear a voice in the distance;
it grew louder and louder.
I began to make it out.
"Clear."
…It said, "Clear."
The light came back;
and the ceiling of a cold, dark hospital room.
Unfortunately, Fortunate
Your fortune is your ruin if you don't know how to use it,
your fortune is your power and pretty soon you'll lose it.
You're too caught up in all that you've been given,
you were handed for what all others have striven.
Your blessings were greater than all the rest,
but your blessings had not been put to the test.
Your friends amounted to the sands of the seas,
your friends were surrounding like buzzing bees.
No one saw it coming, no one predicted your fall,
with nothing to lean back on, there was no one to call.
Everyone thought you were cool, no one saw your mask,
everyone wanted something from you but were too afraid to ask.
They all looked up to you, all knew their place,
everyone knew your name, everyone knew your face.
You had the looks, you had the cash,
yet everyone seemed to forget you, after the crash.
Now your face is rearranged, and your bills are through the roof.
Now you see you were unfortunate, now you have your proof.
No one saw it coming, no one predicted your fall,
no one saw it coming, you least of all.
I Stay
And I see a hand raised before me;
one in need of help, one in need of life,
yet I refuse the call.
I only sit here and stay.
Although the one for me did not;
he spoke patiently with wisdom,
for my understanding was little.
But I stay, I stay, I stay.
I know not why I wait
or why I shall let a friend die;
only that another might grab hold of them.
But I stay, I stay, I stay.
I know not that which is the truth,
but yet there is one truth,
and I know it well.
But still I stay, I stay, I stay.
If I could visualize my wait,
surely then would I see;
carry it on, and carry it on now.
But I stay, I stay, I stay.
And when it is time for me to leave;
the train has arrived,
my bags are packed,
yet there is no one beside me,
Will I stay, will I stay, will I stay?
One-Way Street
Driving down a one-way street.
Not sure when I'll get off, not sure who I'll meet.
Headed toward inevitable collision.
Can never stay in line, despite attempts at precision.
You keep telling me to change my ways;
I keep going on wasting my days.
You say to die for you and not just live,
but my car is low on fuel…I cannot give.
Oncoming traffic is moving straight toward me.
I'll need to get off while I still can;
I'll need to ge--
It's in the Eyes
Her hair was long and wavy.
Her skin was soft and plush.
She had a smile that could melt away a heavy heart;
But her eyes, with a single glance, her eyes could stir up joy in any man.
But the doctors came and took away her luscious locks;
they scorched her lovely skin.
She no longer even had the strength to smile from the sickness that had plagued her.
But her beauty had not left.
Her eyes remained;
they remained the same as before;
and if you looked into them long enough,
you could even catch a glimpse of heaven through all the fire and destruction.
